In June 1991, Fr. Mustos gathered members of the parish for a general meeting to announce plans to create a council of lay members that would help to govern the church community. This new group, the Parish Council was created as a consultative body to the pastor of the church. The council consists of the pastor, two trustees, nine elected members, and five representatives of parish organizations. Thus, the Parish Council was born.

Ever since its creation, the Parish Council has been a support to the pastor in his administrative and pastoral duties. Providing leadership for parish committees and people to organize activities, the Parish Council has become the engine that moves the parish forward together with the pastor. The committees of the Parish Council include the recreation committee which sponsors regular trips for parishioners, the building committee which takes care of the needs of the facilities of the church, the liturgical committee which oversees all those serving the Holy Mass and coordinates special services including holidays and processions, the financial committee which plans activities to raise funds for the church, the public relations committee which advertises the activities of the parish to outer circles, and the Jubilee committee which has worked on planning the church’s 100th anniversary over the course of the last two years.

Activities that were started and/or maintained by the Parish Council since the early 1990’s include parish trips, luncheons, cultural events, church decoration, dinner dances, church cleanup, liturgical events, the annual St. Stephen’s Day picnic, art auctions, and organ concerts.

The turnover of membership with annual elections keeps the council vibrant. In 1997, two youth representatives were installed to make the council a more representative body of the entire parish. The Parish Council offers its support to the pastor in matters both within and outside the parish community. God bless all those called to serve as Parish Council members. Their work is greatly appreciated!
